Robots supplanting manual labor? Already?
June 23, 2007
Now that the price of the dollar and many currencies are dropping drastically and manual labor is getting expensive as demonstrated by major companies hiring employees in Southern Asian regions, what can we do? Well a company in San Diego called Vision Robotics has actually been successful in building a robot that can accurately pick out fruits whether it be oranges, apples, or anything.
Right now, thousands upon thousands of migrants are being paid for labor in picking out these fruits. But with these new robots, all of these migrants would be left without a job and we would be ruled by machines! All of these robots are funded by Agricultural Associations for they are very concerned about the future costs for labor funded by immigrants and everyone else.
Of course, this isn’t the first time someone has tried to do this. Many times have we faced this breakthrough but political influence had became a barrier in reaching this goal and the technology was not good enough. In 1978, the United Farm Workers had revolted to mechanizations that replaced labor. Later on, we all faced technology as a problem as the robots did not do its work as well as they can do nowadays. So by the end of the year, the company would have spent $1 million in this research. It may take $5 million to complete this project as told by Ted Baskin who is president of the California Citrus Research Board.
