Time management- how important is it?
November 13, 2007
Well, one thing I’ve realized in all these years is, time management. Not only have I realized how it will make a difference in my life, but how can I make the best use of it. Time management is one of the biggest factors in determining your success as a individual in society. If one can manage his/her time well, there is never a time of unhappiness. The one reason that gave me the epiphany was ” the time I’ve lost, will never come back”.
There are times in which we all just waste time. We tend to be “bored” when we don’t find things that suit our demands. However, we never realize the hidden fact, and that is why am I not being efficient with my time, why am I killing time when I can make a positive use of it. So, before I go in depth, I want to discuss why we tend to waste time:
The reasons below are just some facts on why we tend to waste time:
We don’t have any clear cut goals. If you don’t have any clear cut long/short term goals, you are wasting time because you yourself don’t know what to do. If I don’t know what to do in my life, I will waste time because I am not building anything. I am not building any references that will lead to my dream future. I myself don’t know what to do, neither does my future.
We don’t realize what time is- If you haven’t felt the importance of time, you just haven’t realized the value. You haven’t realized the agony within , when there is a loss of opportunity just due to laziness, or something within family{ such as missing a family moment, because you were busy with your own thing}
We don’t know what do -If you are in a state where you really don’t know what to do, your in the right path because from now on you will. In a state like this, you either end up picking a positive or a negative path. Find something. Remember nothing is impossible, and build goals that are within your category. Find something to do, and remember you have to be a expert at it, so keep trying.
Why is it important to use your full time, and how can you make a efficient use of it?
First of all, it is important because you can do so much with your time. You can pick up new skill, do something for someone, sharpen your skills, keep your life optimized, and best of all be happy. One of the biggest time wasters are “living in the past”. For example, if you keep thinking “Damn, I wish I started my work earlier, or should’ve taken that job opportunity”, such type of thinking, and re-living is nothing but wasting time, because whatever you do at that moment is not going to change what you’ve done. Why not make a goal in life, and accept the fact that whatever happened can’t be changed, but the future sure can be. If you’ve lost something there is definitely no point in rethinking over it. Just work ahead, and forget what happened. Remember, don’t live in the past, just learn from the past.
Tips on making your time efficient
- Read a new book. Read something you like, and enjoy every bit of it.
- Be organized. This is something I’ve lacked in my days, but after realization, I know there is a shiny organized life. This will help you make the most out of your time.
- Learn a new skill. You are never too old to learn anything.
- Don’t listen to the public. Living a life according to people’s view is the biggest mistake one can make. Do what you want, don’t let others make the decision on what is appropriate to learn and what isn’t. Henry David Thoreau once said ” Public opinion is a weak tyrant compard with our own private opinion. What a man thinks of himself, that is which determines, or rather indicates, his fate”. Source: Walden Pond.
- Make long term goals. If you know what you want to do within next 5 years, you’ll always have something to do. Without a plan, I can’t even help you manage time. Have goals in everything such as education, job, health, etc. No work is small, and no goal is small.
- Embrace failure. If being scared from failing is the biggest fear, you are missing out the fun big time. Failure gives you experience, and greater success in the end. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination.
- Set a schedule - If you have a schedule, you’ll make the most out of your time. Be consistent with whatever you do. Take a resolution, that you will only use the computer for 2 hours a day. Having such type of resolutions will help you make the most.
Go out there, and see the value of time. Make teh’ best out of it.
